ABOUT THE COMMITTEE FOR EXCELLENCE

The Committee for Excellence is an advocacy and campaign support group for the Shawnee Mission School District. It was established in late 1985 to campaign for separate district operating mill levy and bond issues. Voters overwhelmingly approved the operating mill levy issue in March, 1987 and then returned to the polls in November, 1987 and approved the bond issue.

The Committee for Excellence continued to serve as an advocacy group after those elections.  It has now served in that capacity for 35 years.

The Committee for Excellence also served as a campaign committee on the school district’s 1994 bond issue, the 2002 county sales tax for education, the district’s 2004 bond issue, the 2005 county education sales tax renewal, and the district’s 2007 Local Option Budget election.  By wide margins, voters in the Shawnee Mission School District approved school district funding, or countywide funding in the case of the county sales tax, in all of those elections.

Most recently, the Committee for Excellence conducted the community-wide campaign for the 2015 Local Option Budget and Bond elections. These two questions were presented together on the districts first ever mail-in ballot election. Both questions passed with over 80% approval.
